In a world where identities are shaped by societal expectations, careers, and achievements, it’s easy to become disconnected from our true essence. The pressure to define ourselves based on temporary, external factors can leave us feeling inadequate or lost. But for believers, our identity is rooted in something far greater—our eternal relationship with Christ. When we accept Jesus as Lord, our identity shifts from the world’s definition to God’s definition. This new identity carries with it a wealth of blessings, power, and authority. In the following sections, we will explore the incredible identity we have in Christ, guided by the illuminating words of Scripture.
One of the most significant transformations that occur when we accept Jesus is the adoption into God’s family. John 1:12 declares, “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” As God’s children, we inherit His love, guidance, blessings, power, and protection.
2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” Our acceptance of Jesus brings about a rebirth, a new life, and a new identity. We are no longer defined by our past but by our future in Christ.
Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are not only forgiven but also made righteous in God’s eyes. Righteousness is a gift received through faith, not by works (2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 3:22-24). Because of Christ, we have been made right with God and now stand justified, blameless, and fully accepted by Him. Our reconciliation with God means we are no longer separated from Him but restored to fellowship (Colossians 1:22). Through Jesus, we are welcomed back into His presence, free from condemnation, and able to walk in His love and grace.
As believers, we are not powerless when facing life’s challenges. Luke 10:19 reminds us of the authority Jesus has given us, ‘to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy.’ Whether it’s rebuking fear, declaring victory in a difficult situation, or standing firm in faith during adversity, we carry the power of God in us. This authority allows us to live fearlessly and confidently, knowing that the Spirit within us is greater than any opposition we face.
Ephesians 1:19-20 speaks of the immeasurable greatness of God’s power, which is at work in us, the same power that raised Christ from the dead. This resurrection power dwells in us, empowering us to overcome challenges and live victoriously.
Through Christ, we are not only victorious but more than conquerors. Romans 8:37 declares, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” This means we are equipped to overcome trials, resist the enemy, and walk in victory, no matter the circumstances. 1 John 5:4 further reinforces this truth: “For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” Our faith in Christ enables us to stand strong, push through adversity, and emerge victorious in every battle we face.
In Christ, we find complete forgiveness for our sins (Ephesians 1:7), salvation from eternal separation from God (Romans 10:9), and an abundant life filled with blessings (Ephesians 1:3).
Psalm 107:20 declares, “He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions,” affirming that Jesus bore our sicknesses, afflictions, and addictions so that we could walk in liberty and divine health. Additionally, Colossians 1:13 tells us that God “has delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.” This means we are no longer bound by fear, oppression, or strongholds—we are set free in Christ!
Our primary identity is who God says we are, defined by His love, grace, and purpose for our lives. Often, people confuse this primary identity with their secondary identity related to their profession, achievements, or roles. While our earthly roles have significance, they should never overshadow our radical and supernatural identity in Christ.
In addition to our core identity in Christ, God has uniquely shaped each of us for a specific purpose. Rick Warren, in “The Purpose Driven Life,” outlines how we can understand our unique role through the acronym S.H.A.P.E.—Spiritual Gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences. Each of these elements contributes to who we are and how we serve God’s kingdom. Our Spiritual Gifts are the talents God has given us to build His Church. Our Heart represents our passions—the things we care deeply about. Our Abilities are the natural skills God gave us and that we continue to develop. Our Personality defines how we interact with the world. While God does not change our unique and God-given Personality, He does work to transform our Character! Our Experiences, both good and bad, shape our story and testimony. When we embrace our S.H.A.P.E., we align with God’s calling for our lives and walk in the fullness of our identity and purpose.
The devil’s top strategy is to steal our identity, leading us to believe lies about ourselves. This stronghold of false identity can manifest as self-doubt, insecurity, and feelings of inadequacy. The enemy doesn’t want us to discover the truth of who we are in Christ. When the devil tempted Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), the primary attack was on His identity. ‘If you are the Son of God…’ the enemy taunted. In the same way, the enemy tries to sow seeds of doubt in us, causing us to question who we are in Christ (i.e., our new identity and our new power and benefits). But just as Jesus responded with the truth of God’s Word, we too must stand firm in our identity by declaring God’s truth over our lives.
Our identity in Christ is a treasure trove of blessings, power, and authority. We are children of God, new creations, and carriers of resurrection power. We are forgiven, saved, delivered, and blessed beyond measure. While our earthly roles have value, our primary identity in Christ transcends them all. Let us boldly embrace this identity, resisting the enemy’s attempts to steal it from us. As we stand firmly in who God says we are, we will walk in the confidence and authority that come from knowing our true identity in Christ.
As believers, it’s crucial not only to know our identity in Christ but to actively declare it. The Bible teaches us that life and death are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21), and our words have the ability to shape our thoughts, emotions, and actions. By affirming who God says we are, we align our hearts and minds with His truth, allowing our identity to take root and flourish. Below, you’ll find a series of affirmations based on Scripture to speak over yourself daily. As you declare these truths, let them saturate your spirit and remind you of your true identity in Christ.
